Whether you’re riding a bike or scooter, there are a few cycling laws all riders must follow to help ensure a safe ride:
- - Ride in the same direction as traffic
- - Follow all traffic signs and signals
- - Yield to pedestrians
- - Walk bikes on sidewalks
- - Use hand signals when turning, and do not to weave in and out of traffic
- - Never ride distracted - wearing headphones in both ears is illegal, and it’s never a good idea to use your phone while riding
- - Use caution when bringing additional items that may impact your ability to safely ride, such as a large bag
- - Check the weather before heading out - it can be unsafe to ride a bike or scooter in dangerous weather
- - Never ride under the influence of alcohol or drugs
All users must be 16 years or older to ride.
Keep in mind it's generally safest to take a route that includes a bike lane. When you map out a ride using the mobile app, we'll show you a route using bike lanes whenever possible. You can also use Google Maps to find bike routes using bike lanes. And there are many other resources for cyclists available online, such as this Chicago Bike Map of bike paths, bike lanes, & greenways.
With our new scooters, make sure to put your phone in the built-in phone holder, and use the turn signals to indicate your next move. Keep an eye on the lights on the handlebars, as they will display zoning restrictions, such as parking and no riding zones. You’ll also find brakes on each handlebar.
Although not required, Divvy strongly encourages all riders to wear helmets while riding.
